Nonverbal communication and its types
Ways to get information
Man in essence is a social being, one way or another, he has been strongly associated with society throughout his life. The main mechanism of its interaction with other individuals is communication, that is, the exchange of information. Communication is necessary for people all the time: in personal relationships, in business, in gaining experience and transferring it. Information surrounds the person everywhere and, of course, verbal (verbal) communication plays the main role in its distribution. It is believed that the information we receive through speech accounts for about 80% of the received data. But, surprisingly as it may sound, these 80% are often not enough to understand the interlocutor. Often people deliberately or unintentionally distort information and say what they think is not. At this point, non-verbal communication comes to the rescue.
What is non-verbal communication?
Non-verbal communication is the reception or transmission of information not through language, but through facial expressions, gestures, intonation and other non-speech means of communication. It not only complements the spoken phrases, but can also strengthen or weaken them. For example, the phrase "very nice", spoken sympathetically and with a smile, differs dramatically in meaning from the same phrase, spoken in a discontented tone and with appropriate facial expressions. The same letters, the same words, and the meaning of these two expressions is almost the opposite. Usually, non-verbal communication occurs unconsciously and spontaneously, and if a person manages to control his speech, then his gestures and movements can reveal his true intentions.
The main types of non-verbal communication. Gestures
People use gestures almost always and everywhere: they greet, nodding their head, gesticulating with disputes, waving goodbye. What emotion is not enough without gestures. Quite often, such non-verbal communication simply replaces speech, for example, in conditions where silence is required, or, conversely, at noisy parties. Using gestures outside the country, it is important to first find out their meaning in order not to get into ridiculous situations. For example, in Bulgaria, swinging your head from side to side means "yes", and nodding - "no."
Very often we hear the phrase: "everything is written on his face."Indeed, it is very difficult to hide your emotions and state of mind in such a way that nothing is reflected on your face. Actors, for example, specifically develop facial muscles to increase emotional expressiveness.
As mentioned above, this non-verbal communication can turn the meaning of the above phrase on its head. It is important to pay attention also to the pace and tone of the conversation, pauses in sentences.
Tactile nonverbal communication
With the help of touch, we also, sometimes unconsciously, transmit to the interlocutor various types of communication. This includes friendly pats on the shoulder, strong hugs, business handshakes.
The value of non-verbal communication
In our time, non-verbal communication attach great importance. Knowing this language, it is easier for a person to understand the meaning of the information transferred, to find out the real attitude of the interlocutor towards him. At the same time, knowing non-verbal communication allows you to learn how to control and control your emotions.
